Frequently Asked Questions
Ramadan 2026 in Malaysia is expected to begin on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 (Day 1 / 1 Ramadan 1447H), subject to official moon sighting confirmation by the Malaysian government (Kementerian Agama). The 30th fast is expected on March 19, 2026, with Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eid Al-Fitr) celebrated on March 20 or 21, 2026.
Malaysia spans a wide range of longitudes β from Perlis in the northwest (~100Β°E) to Sabah in the northeast (~118Β°E). Even though all of Malaysia uses a single timezone (MYT, UTC+8), the geographic spread means sunrise and sunset occur at very different clock times. For example, Sandakan in Sabah sees Iftar about 65 minutes earlier than Kuala Lumpur on the clock. This is why JAKIM publishes separate timetables (takwim) for different zones.
Malaysia uses the JAKIM (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia) calculation method, which divides the country into multiple prayer zones (zon solat). The Imsak time (Sehri ends) is set 10 minutes before Fajr, and Iftar begins at the exact moment of Maghrib (sunset). Times on this site are approximations β always use the official e-Solat app or your state's official timetable for exact timings.
Since Malaysia is close to the equator, fasting hours are very consistent throughout Ramadan β approximately 13 hours 20 minutes to 13 hours 35 minutes in Peninsular Malaysia. This is among the more moderate fasting durations globally. East Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak) has similar hours. The duration increases only slightly over the 30 days as the sun rises slightly earlier and sets slightly later.
In Malaysia, Sehri (pre-dawn meal) is locally known as Sahur or Imsak (the official cut-off time). Iftar (breaking of fast at sunset) is known as Berbuka Puasa. Malaysia has a vibrant Ramadan food culture with huge bazaar Ramadan markets (Bazar Ramadan) operating across towns, offering a vast variety of traditional Malay, Indian Muslim, and fusion foods for breaking fast.
