What is Fitra (Zakat al-Fitr)?

Fitra, formally known as Zakat al-Fitr or Sadaqah al-Fitr, is a mandatory Islamic charity paid at the end of Ramadan before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made it obligatory for every Muslim.

Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenity, and as food for the poor. (Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah)

How Much Is Fitra in 2026 (Ramadan 1447H)?

Fitra equals the monetary equivalent of one saa' — approximately 2.5–3 kg of a staple food such as rice, wheat, barley, dates or raisins. Most countries allow paying the current cash equivalent.

  • Bangladesh 2026 (official — Islamic Foundation):
    BDT 110 (wheat/flour — minimum) · BDT 595 (barley) · BDT 2,475 (dates) · BDT 2,640 (raisins) · BDT 2,805 (cheese — maximum)
  • Saudi Arabia 2026: SAR 30 per person (rice)
  • Pakistan 2026: PKR 300 per person (wheat — minimum)
  • United Kingdom 2026: £5 per person (wheat/flour — minimum)

Who Must Pay Fitra?

Every Muslim who possesses food beyond their basic daily needs on the day of Eid is obligated to pay Fitra. It is paid for oneself and for every Muslim dependant in the household — spouse, children and any other family member under your care. It is even due for a newborn baby if born before Eid day.

When to Pay Fitra

Fitra must be paid before the Eid prayer. It is strongly recommended to pay 1–2 days before Eid so that recipients can benefit in time for the Eid celebration. Paying after the Eid prayer reduces it from obligatory Zakat to voluntary Sadaqah.

What is Zakat al-Mal? How to Calculate It

Zakat al-Mal is the annual obligatory charity of 2.5% on all eligible savings and assets that have remained above the Nisab threshold for one complete lunar year (the Hawl). It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

What is the Nisab for Zakat in 2026?

There are two Nisab thresholds — if your net wealth exceeds either one, Zakat is due:

  • 🥇 Gold Nisab (85g): approx. $8,585 USD / BDT 9,44,350 / SAR 32,194 / PKR 23,92,195
  • 🥈 Silver Nisab (595g): approx. $613 USD / BDT 67,430 / SAR 2,299 / PKR 1,70,823

Many contemporary scholars recommend the silver Nisab as it includes more people and generates more support for the poor.

What Assets Are Zakatable?

  • Cash at home and in bank accounts
  • Gold and silver (current market value)
  • Stocks, shares and investment funds
  • Business merchandise and trade goods
  • Money owed to you that is likely to be repaid
  • Savings in pension funds (scholars differ — many say Zakat is due on withdrawal)

Personal residence, your car, household furniture and items for personal use are not zakatable.

The Eight Recipients of Zakat (Asnaf)

Allah specifies eight categories of Zakat recipients in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60):

  • 1. The poor (al-fuqara)
  • 2. The needy (al-masakeen)
  • 3. Zakat administrators
  • 4. Those whose hearts are to be reconciled
  • 5. Freeing the enslaved (today: anti-trafficking efforts)
  • 6. The heavily indebted
  • 7. In the cause of Allah (fi sabilillah)
  • 8. The stranded traveller (ibn al-sabil)

What is the difference between Fitra and Zakat al-Mal?
Fitra (Zakat al-Fitr) is a fixed per-person charity — equivalent to one saa' of staple food — paid at the end of Ramadan before Eid. It is compulsory for every Muslim who has food beyond their basic needs, regardless of total wealth. Zakat al-Mal is the annual 2.5% charity on total net savings and assets above the Nisab threshold, payable once a year after that wealth has been held for a full lunar year (Hawl). Both are obligatory acts of Islamic charity.

Can I pay Fitra online or through a charity?
Yes. Many Islamic charities and Zakat organisations accept Fitra payments online and distribute them to eligible recipients before Eid. You can pay through your local mosque, a national Zakat organisation, or an international Islamic charity. The essential requirement is that Fitra reaches an eligible recipient before the Eid prayer.
