China's CCTV Video News Agency (CCTV+) and Zambia's broadcasting regulator, the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA), signed and exchanged a memorandum of understanding (MoU) under the Global South Media Partners Mechanism on Wednesday in Beijing.
Initiated by the China Media Group (CMG) in November, the Global South Media Partners Mechanism aims to deepen collaboration among media organizations from Global South countries, enhance the international discourse power and narrative capacity of the Global South and promote a more inclusive and balanced global communication landscape.
Webster Malido, director general of the IBA who led the Zambian delegation to Beijing for the exchange event, hailed the professional capabilities and global influence of the CMG and its China Global Television Network (CGTN).
He expressed the hope that more high-quality news content from China will reach Zambian audiences through CCTV+, an agency operated by the CMG and serving as a central hub for distributing Chinese video news content globally.
Through the Global South Media Partners Mechanism, the IBA looks forward to strengthening media cooperation in the fields of economy, culture, science and technology to jointly tell stories from the Global South, said Malido.
"We believe that there's an opportunity here to continue to grow our media landscape within the Global South in terms of professional development that includes the training of our media professionals, but also providing opportunities for more international and global visibility of content within the Global South," said Malido.
Chikosola Chuula, chairperson of the board of the IBA, hoped that the exchange event will serve as a starting point for advancing more collaborative projects, enabling the people of Zambia and Africa to gain a more comprehensive understanding of China, Africa and the world through the CMG.
"I think the main thing that we struggle within the Global South is really having access to have our voices heard and aired. I think one thing that this cooperation will help with is ensuring that we have an opportunity to have a platform that is global and has a very extensive reach, which normally we don't have access to. I think also the interest that CCTV has shown and CCTV+ has shown gives us confidence that we'll be able to have our voices heard," said Chuula.
Jameson Mbale, a board member of the IBA, said that cooperation between the two sides will inject new vitality and momentum into Zambia's media industry.
At Wednesday's exchange event, the delegation from Zambia also visited the office area of the CGTN to learn about its achievements in integrated media communication and discussed their potential cooperation opportunities in the future.
